Creative Media Studio 1:Integrated Studio Project (Execution)

Artist's statement:

This animation is inspired by various stories about sexual abuse on children and my own personal experience on the subject of sexual abuse. There are many medias produced on the prevention measures and warnings about sexual abuse, but I don’t see enough for those that have gone through sexual abuse and so have lost love for themselves and their lives. Thus I wanted to create a motivational and inspiring animation to instil hope and confidence for the victims as to regain the power to cherish their body and life in hopes of helping them to positively move forward in life. “

Difficulties/Reflection:

Not sure whether it was my lack of experience in any animation work or my poor knowledge of using Adobe programmes, that I had to go through several rendering failures, corrupted files and countless save interruptions.

Drawing each frame

A screenshot of my work before the file went corrupt

The message that appeared after I tried to open said file from above (My heart stopped beating for a while)

Message that I absolutely could not understand

Redoing this part in the animation from scratch ):

However, it was a sweet experience despite being dipped into bitterness to the near drowning point. The project taught me a lot about the work that goes behind animation and design work. I have a deeper appreciation for animators, especially those that do draw each frame by hand because that's what I mostly did in my project. It was strenuously satisfying to see the outcome of effortful work and lots of heart in every frame.

Final project: Installation/Situation Project

Title: "Parallel Space"

Artists' statement:

The idea of this artwork is to show creation of a virtual space in between layers, which the top and bottom water surface in the basin shows a space in-between. The inspiration comes from looking at things in a different way with a different perspective.

Why place the artwork there?:

Because we wanted to show a connection with the environment and artwork that is why we placed the artwork in-between 2 flights of stairs in hopes of letting it blend with the artwork.

Why choose these materials?:

We used a glass bowl, water and various marbles/ornaments.

Because we believe that using a transparent glass container in a round shape can project the image of a planet, and after being filled with water and ornaments, it can represent clouds(from the blue marbles) as we think that the colour and shape could show the bouncy and fluffy-like shape. The reason why we wanted to show reflections of clouds is because we wanted the image of the sky inside the bowl and to project the image to the surface, where it creates another layer of the world we live in.

Difficulties:

It was difficult to find the area between 2 flights of stairs to show the same vision that we had in our mind and with regards to safety issues. We experimented with using light to play with reflection of our artwork, but due to the limited time and resources, we could not develop our artwork any further. Thus we chose the location in-between stairs rather than using light. Also, we believe that using a mirror could have reinforced our idea much better considering that it could have reflected more idealistic images of our artwork.

Title: "Plastic Hurts"

This artwork is about creating water bottles to store our water, but in exchange, we hurt the environment and that is why I wanted to create the plastic bottles looking as if it was stabbed and in pain.

Week 10:
Instructor:
Cedric Maridet

Agenda:
-critique of clay work
-discuss  the work of Alina Szapocznikow
-in-class exercise: playing with textures / parts and whole
-surrealism

In-class exercise: Playing with textures / parts and whole through clay

Artwork title: "Give Life"

I was inspired by the water bottle's function of storing water and since water could be symbolised as the source of life so the concept of this artwork is to create life by pouring the bottle and it's content can be the source of power to generate life, thus a plant was born.

Clay work exercise (1)

Eyes closed, create a shape using bare hands only. Give a title to the shape and explain why

Title:  "Battered"

The reason for this artwork is because I explored the clay by clenching it with my hand. Sort of like crushing it, because I wanted to fully feel the texture of the clay on palm and also, I wanted this artwork to portray the image of being beaten up. There are times in life where I felt like I was metaphorically being beat up because of the pressure and stress. That's why I named this artwork battered

Clay work exercise (2)

Listen to music, and create a shape or series of shapes that can represent the sound or part of the sound. Describe your work.

Song:

"haunt Me, Haunt Me, Do It Again" by Tim Hecker

Title of artwork: "Don't Want to Grow Yet"

The melody of the song was quite soft in the beginning and it had this enchanting but a touch of eerie feel to it, which gave me an idea to use flower petals as the base of my artwork to represent growth, because I feel that this song has this progression that  makes things grow that's why I wanted this artwork to have a sense of growth in it by the use of flower petals opening up, but the small head peeking out has a scared and worried expression to show that it's growth frightens him and so this artwork is about not wanting to grow up too quick, which reflects my personal feelings towards my own life as well.

- In-class assignment (2)

Build an object that represents yourself. Give it a title. Where to place this object?

Title: "Hiding Fire"

I used the previous exercise's artwork as the base of this artwork. I created a series of folds as I was inspired by the shape of a coral. I adore the tree-like that has unique shapes. This object represents me, because I have a timid personality and the clown in me is aways hiding. That's why this artwork has a reference to a burning fire, but the flaps are covering my shy personality. I placed it  on my palm against a black wall, because I think it contrasts well with the white clay, giving it a sharp look. Also, it's an extension of myself that's why I placed it on my palm.
