Creative Media Studio 1:Integrated Studio Project (Conception pt. 1)

Meet the character: Lily

This is the early concept for my animation and it is going to be about a little girl narrating in first-person view so I made rough drafts of the little girl's character. Slowly constructing her personality and look.  Her name will be Lily, a sweet and curious young girl and she will be narrating throughout the story.

Creative Media Studio 1:Integrated Studio Project (Research pt. 2)

I found some works that helped my research

I found a short animated film titled Komal by Childline India and it's about child sexual abuse. While watching it, the part where Komal was getting sexually abused by her uncle sent chills down my spine even though the animation was quite light and simple in terms of graphics and colour. The short film sparked my interest to use animation as my medium for my artwork, because I think that animation gives me the ability to show various sequences of my art and it's a good opportunity for me to practise my skills on animation. However, I'd like to be less direct in showing the viewer about someone being sexually abused compared to the short film 'Komal' and be a tad bit more abstract but still quite able to understand the topic.

I was further inspired by this 2D animation titled Thought of You by Robert Woodward.

I was definitely enthralled by the dancing of the characters, but what I loved most in this animation was the simplicity of the characters' and the background's design. The beautiful pencil-like lines representing the man and woman was separated by colour of black and white. I think the use of black for the man was due to the colour's bold and masculine appeal and as for the white's delicate and purity may have been applied to the female character in the animation.

The light texturised beige as the animation's background for the whole period was a good choice since it didn't overwhelm the viewers and doesn't distract us from watching the characters dance and making the bottom smoother gave depth to the characters, making it look as if they were standing on a smooth surface.

His short animation inspired me to simplify my design of my art in my potential animation in terms of design and colour, because I believe it gives more room and feasibility to transition different expressions and meaning.

Creative Media Studio 1: Integrated Studio Project (Research pt. 1)

The theme of this project is "How to do things with (Cross Media) Art?"

Inspiration:

I didn't want to force out a topic from me considering I didn't have an idea on what to make. That's why, for a month or so, I went on a visual buffet which includes going on Tumblr to look at numerous  images, watched a couple movies and observed my surroundings especially people. I wanted my mind to relax and let myself absorb whatever I saw so that it could spark an idea for me. Then it happened.

I watched this movie called Forrest Gump. A story told in the eyes of a man who has lower-than-average IQ, the movie spans across decades of his life, showing how he lived more than what others may have expected his to be limited. I absolutely enjoyed the movie and what caught my attention other than Forrest Gump himself...

..was his first love,  Jenny Curran. A very charming girl but paired with a troubled past. Her issue about being sexually abused by her father was highlighted softly in the movie, easily making the audience shift their attention away from it. However, her journey through it touched my heart and gave me an idea to pursue my Integrated Studio Project. Thus my idea for it is...

"How to heal with (Cross Media) Art?"

Project proposal:

The concept for my idea is to make an artwork with the aim of helping sexual abuse victims reinforce their confidence and hope to forgive and free themselves from hatred and depression in order to live a healthier and more peaceful life.  In return, this project will also help me explore the process of healing and gain a better understanding of it.
