In-class exercise: Playing with textures / parts and whole through clay

Artwork title: "Give Life"

I was inspired by the water bottle's function of storing water and since water could be symbolised as the source of life so the concept of this artwork is to create life by pouring the bottle and it's content can be the source of power to generate life, thus a plant was born.

Clay work exercise (1)

Eyes closed, create a shape using bare hands only. Give a title to the shape and explain why

Title:  "Battered"

The reason for this artwork is because I explored the clay by clenching it with my hand. Sort of like crushing it, because I wanted to fully feel the texture of the clay on palm and also, I wanted this artwork to portray the image of being beaten up. There are times in life where I felt like I was metaphorically being beat up because of the pressure and stress. That's why I named this artwork battered

Clay work exercise (2)

Listen to music, and create a shape or series of shapes that can represent the sound or part of the sound. Describe your work.

Song:

"haunt Me, Haunt Me, Do It Again" by Tim Hecker

Title of artwork: "Don't Want to Grow Yet"

The melody of the song was quite soft in the beginning and it had this enchanting but a touch of eerie feel to it, which gave me an idea to use flower petals as the base of my artwork to represent growth, because I feel that this song has this progression that  makes things grow that's why I wanted this artwork to have a sense of growth in it by the use of flower petals opening up, but the small head peeking out has a scared and worried expression to show that it's growth frightens him and so this artwork is about not wanting to grow up too quick, which reflects my personal feelings towards my own life as well.

- In-class assignment (2)

Build an object that represents yourself. Give it a title. Where to place this object?

Title: "Hiding Fire"

I used the previous exercise's artwork as the base of this artwork. I created a series of folds as I was inspired by the shape of a coral. I adore the tree-like that has unique shapes. This object represents me, because I have a timid personality and the clown in me is aways hiding. That's why this artwork has a reference to a burning fire, but the flaps are covering my shy personality. I placed it  on my palm against a black wall, because I think it contrasts well with the white clay, giving it a sharp look. Also, it's an extension of myself that's why I placed it on my palm.
